Covered in the Dust of the Rabbi
Luke 9:23
Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”

Reflection
In the days of Jesus, disciples followed their rabbi everywhere. They did not simply attend a lesson and go home. They walked with him through villages, sat beside him during meals, and listened as he explained the Scriptures along the road. Life itself became the classroom.
Jewish tradition preserves a beautiful blessing about discipleship:
“May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi.”
Imagine the scene. A rabbi walks down a dry, dusty road, and his disciples follow closely behind. The dust kicked up from his sandals rises into the air and settles on their clothes and faces. They are so close to him that the path he walks becomes their path too. To be “covered in the dust of the rabbi” meant you were near enough to watch everything he did and hear everything he said.
This is the kind of relationship Jesus invited His disciples into. They followed Him from town to town, learning not only from His teaching but from His life. They watched Him show compassion to the sick, forgive sinners, and speak truth with authority. By staying close to Him, they slowly began to reflect His heart.
For us today, the image still speaks. We may not walk the dusty roads of Galilee beside Jesus, but through the Holy Spirit we can remain just as close to Him. Every day we have the invitation to follow our Rabbi, listening to His words in Scripture, responding to His gentle leading, and allowing His character to shape our own.
Being covered in the dust of the Rabbi means choosing to stay near Him. It means walking the path He walks, loving the people He loves, and trusting Him enough to follow wherever He leads. As we do, something remarkable happens: the life of Jesus begins to mark our lives. His patience softens our reactions. His mercy reshapes our judgments. His love becomes visible through us.
Discipleship is not about perfection. It is about proximity. The closer we walk with Jesus, the more His life settles upon us like dust from the sandals of our Rabbi.
Prayer
Jesus, my Rabbi and my Lord, draw me closer to You. Teach me to walk in Your footsteps and to stay near Your heart. Help me listen carefully to Your words and follow where You lead. Through Your Holy Spirit, shape my life so that Your love and mercy are seen in me. Let my life reflect Yours as I learn to walk with You each day. Amen.
