Talking With God in Prayer

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6–7

Reflection

When we think about prayer, it’s easy to imagine something formal or complicated.

But at its heart, prayer is simply talking with God.  Just as we grow closer to people by sharing our thoughts and listening to theirs, our relationship with Jesus grows as we speak with Him openly and honestly.  Prayer isn’t about using perfect words. It isn’t about impressing God with long or polished sentences. In fact, Jesus specifically warned against trying to sound impressive when we pray.

Instead, He taught His followers to approach God like children coming to a loving Father.

That means we can talk with Him about anything.  We can thank Him for the good things in our lives.  We can ask for help when we’re struggling. We can share our fears, our hopes, and the things that weigh on our hearts.

God already knows what we are facing, but prayer opens the door for us to experience His presence and His peace in the middle of it.  Sometimes prayer is quiet and reflective. Sometimes it’s a simple sentence whispered during the day. Sometimes it’s a conversation we have with God while walking, driving, or sitting quietly with Him. And as we begin to pray regularly, something beautiful happens.  We start to become more aware that God is with us in every moment of life. Prayer reminds us that we are never walking alone.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that I can come to You at any time. Thank You for listening to my heart and caring about every part of my life. Teach me to talk with You openly and honestly, and help me trust that You are always near. Fill my heart with Your peace as I learn to walk with You each day. Amen.
