Sometimes when we think about God, we imagine Him as distant—far away in heaven, watching the world from above. But the story of Jesus tells us something completely different. God did not stay far away. He came near.

John writes that “the Word became flesh.” The Greek word used for Word here is Logos (λόγος). In Greek thought, logos referred to reason or the ordering principle of the universe. But John uses the word to show that the very self-expression of God stepped into human history.

God didn’t just send a message. He became the message.

John also says the Word “became flesh.” The Greek word is sarx (σάρξ), meaning real human flesh—human life with all its weakness and vulnerability. Jesus didn’t simply appear human. He truly entered our condition. He knew hunger, weariness, joy, friendship, sorrow, and suffering.

Then John tells us something beautiful.He says the Word “made His dwelling among us.”

The phrase literally means “He tabernacled among us.”The Greek word eskēnōsen (ἐσκήνωσεν)comes from the word for tent or tabernacle. This is intentional language.In the Old Testament, the Tabernacle was the place where God's presence dwelled among His people in the wilderness. But John is telling us something extraordinary. God came again to dwell among His people. Only this time His dwelling place was a person.

Jesus Himself.

The presence of God that once filled the tabernacle now walked dusty roads, sat at tables, and spoke with ordinary people. God stepped into our world. He came near enough to be seen, heard, touched, and known.

God Promised He Would Provide the Sacrifice

When Jesus came near, He was fulfilling something God had hinted at long before. From the beginning of Scripture, God was quietly revealing that He Himself would provide the sacrifice needed to save us. One of the earliest moments appears in the story of Abraham.

Genesis 22:8 (BSB)
“Abraham answered, ‘God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’”

On that mountain, Abraham spoke words that carried prophetic meaning far beyond that day. God Himself would provide the Lamb. And centuries later, when Jesus appeared, John the Baptist recognized Him immediately.

“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Jesus was not just another teacher. He was the Lamb God had promised to provide.

The Promise Hidden in the Beginning

Even earlier, right after sin entered the world, God hinted that He would be the one to fix what humanity had broken.

Genesis 3:15 (BSB)
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel.”

This verse is often called the first gospel promise. God foretold that one day a descendant would defeat evil, even though it would come through suffering. That descendant would be Jesus.

The Servant Who Would Bear Our Sin

Centuries later, the prophet Isaiah described a mysterious servant who would carry the sins of others.

Isaiah 53:5 (BSB)

“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”

And Isaiah adds something remarkable.

Isaiah 53:6 (BSB)

“The LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.”

God Himself would place our sin upon the One He sent.

God Came to Save Us Himself

The prophets even spoke about God personally coming to rescue His people.

Isaiah 35:4 (BSB)
“Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come… He will come to save you.”

Not simply send help. He would come Himself. And that is exactly what happened in Jesus.

A Deeper Word Picture

There is a beautiful connection here with a Hebrew idea. In the Old Testament, the word often associated with God's dwelling presence is connected to the Hebrew word shakan (שָׁכַן), meaning “to dwell” or “to settle down among.” From this idea comes the concept of Shekinah, used in Jewish tradition to describe the dwelling presence of God among His people.

John is showing us that what the Tabernacle symbolized, Jesus fulfilled. God’s presence no longer lived in a tent or temple. It now lived in a person. Jesus is God dwelling with us.

What This Means for Us

Jesus stepping into our world shows us something about the heart of God. God did not wait for us to reach Him. He came to us. He did not ask us to fix the problem of sin ourselves. He provided the sacrifice Himself. Jesus is not only God with us. He is God for us. And because He came near, we can know that no part of our life is outside of His understanding or His love.

Lord,
Thank You for coming near.
Thank You that You did not remain distant but stepped into our world through Jesus.
Thank You for providing the sacrifice we could never provide for ourselves.
Help me live today aware that You are with me and that Your love has already made a way for me. In Jesus Name I pray.
