Counting the Cost

“Then Jesus said to all of them, ‘If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.’” Luke 9:23

Reflection

There’s a quiet honesty in the way Jesus invites people to follow Him. He doesn’t hide anything.  He doesn’t soften the truth to make it easier to accept. But He also doesn’t pressure.

He simply says:

“If anyone would come after Me…”

It’s an invitation.

Not forced.
Not demanded.

But real.

By now, you’ve begun to see who Jesus is. Your Savior. The One who loves you. The One who gave Himself for you. But here is where the relationship deepens.

Because Jesus is not only Savior

He is Lord.

Savior means He rescues you.
Lord means He leads you.

And following Him means something beautiful, but also something honest:

It means surrender.

Not surrender in a harsh or fearful way. But in a trusting way. Like placing your life into the hands of Someone who sees more than you do, who loves you more than you love yourself, who knows the way forward.

We all naturally want control. We want to decide the direction. Set the pace. Hold onto what feels safe. But Jesus gently invites us into something different.

To follow Him is to say:

“Jesus, I trust You more than I trust myself.”

And sometimes that looks like letting go. Letting go of old patterns. Old ways of thinking. Old desires that no longer lead to life. Not because you’re forced to, but because you’re being led into something better.

Jesus says:

“Take up your cross daily…”

Not as a burden to carry alone

But as a daily choice:

To follow Him.
To trust Him.
To walk with Him.

This is not about perfection. It’s about direction. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to surrender everything all at once. But you can begin here, with a simple, honest yes.

Prayer

Jesus,

Thank You for inviting me to follow You. Not with pressure, but with truth. You are not only my Savior, You are my Lord. And I want to trust You. Show me where I’ve been holding on too tightly.

Where I’ve been trying to stay in control. Give me the courage to let go and the peace to trust You with what I release. Lead me, step by step. I choose to follow You.

Amen.
