Courage Grows Below the Surface

Scripture

“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.”

 — Jeremiah 17:7–8

Reflection:

We often imagine courage as something obvious.  We picture bold decisions, confident words, and fearless steps forward. We assume courageous people must feel strong before they act.  But much of the courage God develops in us grows where no one else can see it.  It grows below the surface.

Before a tree can stand tall through strong winds, it must grow deep roots. Those roots develop quietly beneath the ground. There is no applause. No visible progress. No dramatic evidence that anything important is happening.  Yet beneath the surface, the tree is becoming stronger.  God often works in us the same way.

During long seasons of waiting, healing, uncertainty, or preparation, you may feel as though you are not moving forward. You may wonder why you are still struggling with the same fears or why you do not feel more confident by now.  But visible progress is not the only kind of progress.  Every time you choose to pray instead of giving up, your roots grow deeper.  Every time you return to Scripture when fear becomes loud, your roots grow deeper.  Every time you obey God without knowing how everything will turn out, your roots grow deeper.  Every time you bring your disappointment honestly to Jesus and remain near Him, your roots grow deeper.

Courage does not always begin with feeling brave. Sometimes courage begins with remaining planted.  It is staying close to God when you are tempted to pull away.  It is trusting His character when you cannot understand His timing.  It is taking one faithful step while your knees are still shaking.  You may not see everything God is developing in you right now. But that does not mean nothing is happening.

The hidden season is not a wasted season.

God may be strengthening your faith, loosening your dependence on circumstances, teaching you to recognize His voice, or preparing you for something that will require deeper roots than you once had.

When the time comes to climb, the strength you need will not suddenly appear from nowhere. It will rise from the roots God has already been growing in you.

You do not need to force yourself to become fearless.  Stay close to Jesus.  Let His Word nourish you. Let His presence steady you. Let His faithfulness become the ground beneath your feet.  Courage will grow as your trust in Him grows.

Take a Moment With Him

Think about an area of your life where you feel as though very little progress is being made.  Ask God to help you recognize the hidden work He may be doing in you during this season.

Then remind yourself:

I may not see the growth yet, but God is strengthening my roots.

1. Where do I feel discouraged because I cannot see visible progress?

2. How has God been deepening my trust in Him during this season?

3. What fear keeps tempting me to believe that I am not ready for the next step?

4. What is one small act of faithfulness I can choose today?

Prayer

Father,

Sometimes I become discouraged when I cannot see progress. I want to feel stronger, braver, and more prepared than I do right now.

Help me remember that You often do Your deepest work beneath the surface.

Thank You for every quiet moment when You are strengthening my faith, deepening my trust, and teaching me to remain close to You.

When fear tells me that I am not growing, remind me that visible progress is not the only kind of progress.  Plant me firmly in Your truth. Let Your Word nourish my heart and Your presence steady my steps.  Give me courage to remain faithful today, even when I do not feel brave. Help me trust that You are preparing me for the climb ahead.  I believe You are working, even when I cannot see it.

Choose one small practice that will help your roots grow deeper today:

Read a short passage of Scripture, pray honestly about one fear, write down one truth about God’s character, or take one step of obedience you have been postponing.

Do not measure today by how brave you feel.

Measure it by your willingness to remain planted in God.

Courage is often growing long before it becomes visible. 

Stay rooted in Jesus, and trust the work He is doing beneath the surface.
