Do You Consider Yourself a Good Person?

James 2:10
Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

Reflection

Yesterday we talked about the Ten Commandments being like a mirror. A mirror doesn’t fix anything it simply shows us what’s there.

So let me ask you a question.

Do you consider yourself a good person?

Most of us would probably say yes. Not perfect, but generally good. We try to be kind to people. We try to do the right thing most of the time. But instead of comparing ourselves to other people, let’s take a moment to compare ourselves to God’s standard.

The Ten Commandments show us what that standard looks like.

For example, one of the commandments says, “You shall not bear false witness.” In simple terms, that means we shouldn’t lie.

So let me ask you something honestly, have you ever told a lie?

Most of us have. Maybe it was a small lie, maybe it was to avoid trouble, maybe it was to protect ourselves. But if we’ve lied, even once, we know we haven’t always lived in perfect truth.

Another commandment says “You shall not steal.”

That might make us think of something big, but stealing can also mean taking something small that doesn’t belong to us, something from work, something from school, or even something online that we didn’t pay for.

And then there’s another commandment that speaks about honoring God’s name. It reminds us that God’s name is holy and worthy of respect. If we’re honest, many people have spoken God’s name casually or carelessly without realizing what that means.

When we begin to look honestly into the mirror of God’s law, we start to see something important.

Even if we try to live good lives, we’ve all fallen short at different points. And that’s exactly the point the law is meant to show us. The commandments reveal God’s goodness and holiness, but they also help us recognize that we cannot reach that standard by our own effort.

And once we see that truth, something beautiful begins to happen. We start to realize why the message of Jesus is such good news. Because if we cannot save ourselves, then we need someone who can.  And that is exactly why Jesus came.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your Word that helps me see the truth about my heart. Give me the courage to look honestly at my life, knowing that Your love is greater than my failures. Help me understand why I need Your grace and draw me closer to Jesus, who came to save and restore me. Amen.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you think about being a “good person,” who or what do you usually compare yourself to?

  2. How does looking at God’s commandments change the way you see goodness?

  3. Why do you think recognizing our need for grace is such an important step in our relationship with God?

Today’s Thought

When we look honestly into the mirror of God’s law, we begin to understand how deeply we need the grace that Jesus offers.
