God’s Love Is Personal

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine.”

Does God See Me?

In the past, this was a question I often asked myself, especially when situations became unbearable and I cried out in my pain and frustration:

“Where are You, God?”

One of the greatest misconceptions I had about God was believing that His love was general rather than personal. I believed God loved humanity, the church, and certain people. As for me, I thought of myself as just another face in the crowd. One of the masses calling out to Him.

Thankfully, those days are gone.

Today, I can confidently say that God knows me. In fact, He knows me better than I know myself.

Sometimes we think God doesn’t really see us or know us as individuals, but He does. He called Abraham by name. He called Moses by name. He called Samuel by name. He called Mary by name.

And He knows you by name.

Scripture tells us that He even has the hairs on your head numbered.

Pause for a moment and think about that.

I love my children with all my heart. I would gladly lay down my life for them. Yet I don’t know how many hairs are on their heads, and honestly, I’ve never tried counting them.

But God knows.

When we read the Bible, we’re not simply reading stories from the past. We’re reading God’s living Word, filled with truth, wisdom, and reminders of who He is.

Isaiah 43 was originally spoken to Israel during a difficult season. God reminded His people that they belonged to Him—not because they were strong or perfect, but because He had chosen them and loved them.

Notice what God says:

“I have called you by name.”

Names matter.

A name represents identity, character, value, and belonging. One of my favorite examples of this truth is found in the story of Hagar. Hagar was alone, rejected, pregnant, frightened, and fleeing into the wilderness when God appeared to her.

Her response was remarkable:

“You are the God who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13)

The Hebrew name she used for God is El Roi (אֵל רֳאִי).

But in Hebrew thought, “seeing” is much more than simply noticing someone. It carries the idea of understanding, knowing, caring for, and paying attention. God wasn’t merely  looking at Hagar. He understood her story. He knew her pain. He saw her fears. And He came near. The same is true for you.

God is not looking at you as another face in a crowd. He sees your story, your struggles, your fears, and your hopes. He knows the things that make you smile and the burdens that keep you awake at night. Nothing about you is hidden from Him.

And, He loves you completely.  Sometimes we may believe God merely tolerates us.

Sometimes we imagine He is disappointed with us. Sometimes we may fear we have wandered too far or stayed away too long. But God’s love is not based on how well we perform.

 His love begins with His heart toward us. Before you accomplished anything.

Before you were even born. Long before you ever knew Him— He knew you. And He loved you. And He has called you by name.

Today, let this truth settle deeply into your heart: You are not an accident. You are not forgotten. You are known by name and loved by God.

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for knowing me completely and loving me fully.

Help me to believe that Your love is personal and not distant. Remind me that I am not invisible to You.

When I feel overlooked, forgotten, or insignificant, help me remember that You know my name and call me Your own. Teach me to rest in the security of Your love.

2. Is it easier for you to believe that God loves other people than it is to believe that He loves you personally? Why do you think that is?

3. What part of your life do you need to place in the hands of El Roi—the God who sees you—today?

Below it, write Isaiah 43:1.

Spend a few moments thanking God that He knows you personally and loves you completely.
