Hidden Roots Are Still Growing

Reflection
Have you ever looked at your life and wondered whether anything was actually changing?
You have been praying. You have been trying to trust God. You have been reading His Word, bringing Him your questions, and doing your best to remain faithful. But from where you are standing, there does not seem to be much progress. Nothing looks different.
The answer has not arrived. The situation has not changed. The door has not opened. You may even feel as though you are standing in the same place you were weeks or months ago. It can be discouraging when you cannot see evidence that your prayers, obedience, or quiet faithfulness are making a difference. But not all growth is immediately visible.
Before a plant pushes through the soil, something important is happening underneath it.
Roots are forming. They are stretching deeper into the ground, searching for water, taking in nutrients, and creating the support the plant will need when it finally begins growing upward.
From above the soil, it may look as though nothing is happening. But beneath the surface, life is already at work. Your season with God may feel like that. You may not see new leaves yet. You may not have a beautiful testimony tied up with a neat ending. You may not be able to point to an obvious result and say, “There it is. That is what God was doing.”
But hidden roots are still growing.
Every time you turn to God instead of running away, a root goes deeper.
Every time you choose truth over fear, a root grows stronger.
Every time you pray honestly, even when the prayer is only a few tired words, your relationship with Him is being strengthened.
Every time you obey what God has already shown you, even when you cannot see where it is leading, He is building something steady within you.
We often notice outward results more quickly than inward formation. We notice when the prayer is answered. We notice when the opportunity arrives. We notice when the difficult season finally ends. But God also works in the quiet places that other people cannot see.
He may be teaching you patience before He changes the circumstance.
He may be strengthening your trust before He reveals the next step.
He may be healing an old wound before placing something new in your hands.
He may be loosening your grip on control so that your confidence can rest more fully in Him.
That kind of growth rarely feels dramatic.
Most of the time, it happens through ordinary choices made over and over again. You open your Bible when you would rather scroll through your worries. You pause and pray before reacting. You tell God the truth instead of pretending you are fine. You choose forgiveness one more time. You rest when your old pattern would have told you to keep pushing.
You take the next faithful step, even though it feels small. These moments may not look impressive, but they matter. Roots do not need an audience to grow. They only need to remain connected to their source.
Paul tells us to continue living in Christ, rooted and built up in Him. Our stability does not come from having every question answered. It comes from being rooted in Jesus.
Circumstances change.
Emotions rise and fall.
Plans do not always unfold the way we expected.
But Jesus remains steady.
When your roots are growing in Him, you are becoming stronger even when you do not feel strong.
You are learning to draw your identity from His love instead of other people’s approval.
You are learning to draw peace from His presence instead of perfect circumstances.
You are learning to draw hope from His character instead of what you can currently see.
That does not mean the waiting suddenly becomes easy. Sometimes you will still wonder when the growth will finally appear above the surface. You may still ask, “God, how long will this take?”
That is an honest question.
Seeds do not become trees overnight. Deep roots take time. There are seasons when God’s work is more about preparing you than displaying you. There are seasons when He is building the strength you will need for what comes next.
A plant with shallow roots may grow quickly, but it will struggle when the wind comes.
God loves you too much to focus only on fast, visible results. He is interested in forming a faith that can remain steady through disappointment, uncertainty, success, change, and every climb ahead.
He is not wasting this hidden season. The time you spend seeking Him is not wasted.
The prayers that seem unanswered are not ignored. The small acts of obedience are not overlooked. The healing you cannot measure is not imaginary. God is working in places you cannot always see. One day, you may look back and recognize that this was the season when your faith became deeper.
This was when you learned that God could be trusted even without immediate answers.
This was when His presence became more important than having a perfect plan. This was when your roots grew strong enough to hold you through the climb ahead. So do not judge your growth only by what is visible today.
Do not assume that nothing is happening simply because nothing has broken through the surface yet.
Keep meeting with God.
Keep returning to His Word.
Keep bringing Him your honest prayers.
Keep taking the next faithful step.
You do not have to force yourself to grow. Stay connected to Jesus and allow Him to do the work only He can do. Hidden roots are still growing. And in time, what God has been forming beneath the surface will begin to show.
One Small Step for Today
Choose one small way you have grown during this season.
Perhaps you pray more honestly than you once did. Maybe you recover from discouragement more quickly, recognize fear sooner, ask for help more freely, or trust God with something you once tried to control.
Write it down, even if it seems small.
Then thank God for the hidden work He has already begun in you.
Pray:
“Lord, help me trust the growth I cannot yet see.”

Where have I assumed that nothing is happening because I cannot see visible progress?
What quiet change might God already be forming within me?
Am I measuring growth only by changed circumstances, or also by a deepening relationship with Jesus?
What is one small act of faithfulness God is inviting me to continue?
How would this season feel different if I believed God was using it to strengthen my roots?
Prayer
Lord,
Sometimes I become discouraged because I cannot see progress. I look at my circumstances and wonder whether my prayers, obedience, or waiting are making any difference. Forgive me for assuming that nothing is happening simply because I cannot see it yet.
Thank You for working beneath the surface. Thank You for every quiet way You are strengthening my faith, healing my heart, and teaching me to trust You. Help me remain rooted in Jesus.
When I want quick answers, teach me patience. When I feel forgotten, remind me that You see every hidden part of this season. When I am tempted to give up, help me take one more faithful step.
Build in me a faith that is deep, steady, and able to withstand the climb ahead.
Help me trust that the work You have begun is still continuing, even when growth feels slow.
