If God Loves Me, Why Am I Hurting?

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Reflection

Have you ever asked yourself,

“If God loves me, why does this hurt so much?”

Maybe it was after a difficult diagnosis.

A broken relationship.

The loss of someone you love.

A disappointment you never saw coming.

Or perhaps it was one heartbreak too many, and you found yourself wondering where God was in the middle of it all. If you’ve ever asked that question, you’re not alone.

In fact, I think most of us have asked it at one time or another.

Somewhere along the way, many of us begin to believe that if God truly loves us, life should be easier. We imagine that His love should shield us from pain, disappointment, and loss. But that’s not what Scripture teaches.

The Bible is filled with people God loved deeply who experienced tremendous hardship.

Joseph was betrayed by his brothers. Hannah wept through years of unanswered prayers.

David knew rejection and heartache. Paul endured suffering, imprisonment, and loss.

Even Jesus—the beloved Son of God—was described as “a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3).

Pain is not proof that God has abandoned you. Pain is part of living in a broken world.

The good news is that God doesn’t leave us to face it alone. Psalm 34:18 doesn’t say the Lord is close to those who have everything together. It doesn’t say He is near to those who have all the answers.

It says:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”

Close.

Not distant.

Not distracted.

Not disappointed.

Close.

I love that promise because it reminds me that God’s response to our pain is not withdrawal. It’s presence. When your heart is breaking, He draws near. When your tears won’t stop, He stays. When you don’t understand what He’s doing, He remains faithful.

His love doesn’t disappear when pain enters your life. If anything, it becomes even more evident.

Sometimes we look for God’s love in the removal of our suffering. But often we discover His love in the fact that He walks with us through it. The same God who knows your name is the God who sits beside you in your sorrow. He sees every tear. He hears every prayer.

He knows every fear. And He loves you just as much on your hardest day as He does on your best one.

Today, if your heart is hurting, don’t let pain convince you that God has left. He is closer than you think. And His love is stronger than what you’re facing.

Journal Reflection

  1. What hurt, disappointment, or burden are you carrying today that feels especially heavy?

  2. When you are hurting, do you tend to draw closer to God or pull away from Him? Why do you think that is?

  3. How would your perspective change if you believed God was walking beside you in this situation right now?

Prayer

Father,

Sometimes my pain makes me question where You are.

Thank You for reminding me that You are close to the brokenhearted.

Help me remember that Your love has not changed because my circumstances are difficult.

Draw near to me today.

Comfort my heart, strengthen my faith, and help me rest in Your presence.

Thank You for loving me through every season of my life.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Today’s Step

Take five quiet minutes today and tell God honestly where you are hurting.

Don’t try to fix it.

Don’t try to find the right words.

Simply tell Him the truth.

Then sit quietly and remember:

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

Remember

You are seen.

You are known.

You are loved.
