The LORD Will Provide

"And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.'"— Genesis 22:14

Have you ever prayed about something for so long that you started wondering how God was going to work it all out?

You believe He is faithful, but you have no idea what His provision is going to look like. Maybe you've even imagined several ways He could answer your prayers, and none of them seem to be happening.

I wonder if Abraham experienced some of those same questions as he walked toward Moriah. He knew what God had promised concerning Isaac, but he couldn't see how that promise would fit with what God was asking him to do.

Then, on the mountain, Abraham discovered something about God's faithfulness that he would never forget.

 Scripture

"And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.'"— Genesis 22:14

Reflection

As Abraham and Isaac approached the place God had shown them, Isaac noticed something was missing. They had the wood and the fire, but where was the lamb for the offering?

Abraham answered that God Himself would provide the lamb.

What's interesting is that Abraham didn't know exactly how God would resolve the situation. Hebrews 11 tells us that he believed God could even raise Isaac from the dead. Abraham was trusting that God would somehow remain faithful to His promise, even though he couldn't understand how everything would work out.

When they reached the mountain, Abraham prepared the altar. But before he could harm Isaac, the angel of the LORD called out and stopped him.

Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. He offered the ram in place of his son.

Abraham called that place YHWH Yireh, meaning The LORD Will Provide.

I find it interesting that Abraham named the place after what God had done rather than what he himself had accomplished. The story began with God testing Abraham, but it ends with Abraham recognizing God's provision.

Throughout this Journey, we've talked about what difficult seasons can reveal about our hearts. We've considered what happens while we're waiting, what it means to obey when we don't understand, and how our struggles can expose places where trust is difficult for us.

But Genesis 22 also invites us to look beyond ourselves and consider what the experience reveals about God.

Abraham discovered that the God who had made the promise was faithful to keep it.

Now, that doesn't mean every difficult situation in our lives will end with the answer we're hoping for. God doesn't promise that every illness will be healed, every relationship restored, or every problem resolved the way we would like.

But He does invite us to trust His character, even when His provision looks different from what we expected.

Sometimes we become so focused on the particular answer we're waiting for that we overlook the ways God is already caring for us. His provision may include strength for another day, wisdom for a difficult decision, or people who help carry a burden we couldn't manage alone.

As we come to the end of Abraham's journey, I think the question worth considering is this: Am I learning to recognize God's faithfulness even when I don't understand how He's going to work things out?

How Jesus Meets Us

There's another beautiful connection in this story.

On Moriah, God provided a ram in place of Isaac. Many years later, He would provide something far greater through Jesus Christ.

John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus made a way for us to be forgiven and brought into a relationship with God.

That is God's greatest provision for us.

And because of Jesus, we can approach God with our everyday needs, knowing that He cares about what we're facing. We may not receive every answer we want, but we can know the One we're bringing our questions to.

Take a Moment With Him

Think about something you've been asking God to provide. Maybe you're still waiting for an answer, or perhaps the answer has come in a way you didn't expect. Ask Jesus to help you recognize the ways He has been caring for you throughout this season.

Consider whether you've learned anything new about His character, even if your circumstances haven't changed.

Questions

1. When you think about God's provision, do you usually imagine a particular outcome? How might that expectation affect your ability to recognize His care in other ways?

2. Can you remember a time when God provided for you in a way you hadn't expected? What did that experience teach you about Him?

3. Looking back over this Journey, what have you learned about your own heart and God's character that you want to carry into the difficult seasons ahead?

Remember This

God's faithfulness isn't measured by whether He gives us the outcome we're hoping for. Genesis 22 reminds us that He keeps His promises, and through Jesus, He has already provided what we need most.

Today's Faith Step

Take a few minutes to write down three ways God has cared for you during a difficult season. They don't have to be dramatic answers to prayer. Think about the ordinary ways He has sustained you, provided help, or given you strength when you needed it.

Then thank Him for those things as you continue trusting Him with whatever remains unresolved.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for reminding me that Your faithfulness doesn't depend on my understanding of what You're doing. Sometimes I become so focused on the answer I'm waiting for that I forget to recognize the ways You've already cared for me.

Help me remember what Abraham discovered about Your provision. Teach me to trust Your character rather than measuring Your goodness by whether life turns out the way I hoped.

Thank You for the gift of Jesus and the relationship I can have with You because of Him. As I continue walking through this season, help me recognize Your care, grow in my trust, and stay close to You even when I don't have all the answers.

In Jesus' Name, amen.
