When God’s Way Looks Different From Everyone Else’s

Sometimes following God feels simple right up until His way is different from everyone else’s. That is when it can get uncomfortable.

Maybe everyone around you thinks a little gossip is harmless. Maybe cutting a corner is considered normal. Maybe people expect you to get even when someone hurts you or choose whatever is easiest, fastest, or most profitable.

And there you are thinking, “Lord, do I really have to do this differently?”

Joshua was about to lead Israel into a land filled with people whose values, worship, and way of life were very different from what God had taught His people. God knew Joshua would need courage for more than battles.

He would need courage to stay faithful.

Scripture

“Above all, be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever you go.”

Reflection

When God tells Joshua not to turn “to the right or to the left,” He is telling him to stay anchored in what God has already said.

There is also something deeper happening here than simply warning Joshua not to follow the crowd. In the world of the Torah, obedience was tied to covenant. Israel belonged to God, and the way they lived was meant to reflect that relationship.

God was not asking them to be different just for the sake of being different. He was reminding them who they were and whose they were. That changes the way we think about faithfulness.

Following God is not about checking everyone around us to see whether we look different enough. It is about staying close to Him and allowing His character to shape the choices we make.

That can show up in very ordinary ways: the way we speak about someone who is not in the room, how we handle money, what we do after someone hurts us, or whether we choose honesty when dishonesty would be easier. Even the way we treat people who have nothing to offer us can reveal who is shaping our hearts.

There will be times when another choice looks easier or more accepted. That is often where courage is needed—not because we are trying to make a point, but because we remember who we belong to.

How Jesus Meets Us

Jesus showed us what this kind of faithfulness looks like. He gave dignity to people others overlooked, served when others were concerned with status, and chose forgiveness when retaliation would have seemed understandable.

He was not trying to stand out. He was simply faithful to the Father. That is what He invites us into as well. We do not have to prove anything to the people around us. We stay close to Jesus, and over time, His way begins to shape ours.
