When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6

Reflection

Have you ever looked at your life and thought,

“None of this makes sense.”

Maybe you’ve prayed for something with all your heart, only to watch the door close. Maybe you’ve experienced a loss you never expected. Maybe you’ve been waiting for God to answer a prayer, and the silence has been almost as painful as the waiting.

When life doesn’t make sense, it’s natural to ask why? You want answers. You want to understand what God is doing. You want to know that there is a purpose behind your pain. God isn’t offended by those questions. He already knows what’s in your heart.

But sometimes, instead of giving you an explanation, He offers you something even better—His presence.

Proverbs 3 reminds you to trust in the Lord with all your heart and not lean on your own understanding.

Why?

Because your understanding is limited. You see today’s circumstances. God sees your entire story. You see the closed door. God sees the one He’s preparing to open.

You see the disappointment. God sees the purpose that is still unfolding.

That doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real. It doesn’t mean your questions don’t matter.

It simply means that God sees what you cannot.

Isaiah 55:8–9 says,

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

There will be moments when you don’t understand why something happened. There may even be questions that won’t be answered this side of heaven. But here’s what you can know with confidence:

The God who knows your name…

The God who sees your tears…

The God who loves you completely…

Is still writing your story.

He has not forgotten you.

He has not abandoned you.

And He has not stopped working, even if you cannot see it yet. You don’t have to understand every step of the journey to trust the One who is leading you.

Today, take the next step. Leave tomorrow in His hands.

1. What situation in your life feels confusing or unanswered right now?

2. Are you waiting to understand before you’re willing to trust God? What would it look like to trust Him today, even without all the answers?

3. Looking back on your life, can you think of a time when God was working behind the scenes, even though you couldn’t see it at the time?

Prayer

Father,

There are things in my life that I don’t understand.

Sometimes I want answers more than I want faith.

Help me to trust Your heart when I cannot see Your hand.

Remind me that You are working, even when I cannot see what You are doing.

Give me the courage to take the next step and to leave tomorrow in Your hands.

Thank You for being faithful in every season of my life.

Write down one situation that doesn’t make sense right now.

Then underneath it, write these words:

“God sees what I cannot see, and I can trust Him with what I do not understand.”

Read Proverbs 3:5–6 one more time, and ask God to help you take one small step of faith today.
