When You’re Afraid You’ll Choose Wrong

Some decisions feel bigger than they probably are because of one question sitting underneath them:

What if I get this wrong?

Maybe you have prayed about it. You have thought through the options. You may have asked someone you trust what they think. And you are still unsure.

That can be frustrating because sometimes we assume that if we are really listening to God, the answer should become obvious. When it does not, we can start wondering whether we are missing something.

But uncertainty does not mean you are failing at discernment.

Scripture

“Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5

Reflection

James does not seem surprised that we will reach moments when we do not know what to do.

He simply says, If you lack wisdom, ask God.

I like that because there is no shame attached to not knowing.

James does not say, “You should have figured this out by now.” He points us toward a God who gives wisdom generously.

And notice what James tells us to ask for: wisdom.

Not a guarantee. Not a detailed preview of what will happen if we choose option A instead of option B. Wisdom helps us see a situation more clearly and respond faithfully with what we know right now.

That matters because sometimes we are waiting for God to remove every bit of uncertainty before we move. But there are decisions where we may never know exactly how things will turn out.

A wise decision can still lead through a difficult season. An uncertain decision can still be a faithful one. The outcome is not always the best measure of whether we sought God well.

How Jesus Meets Us

Jesus is not standing at a distance waiting for you to figure everything out correctly before He comes near. You can bring Him the confused thoughts, the fear of regret, and even the part of you that wishes He would simply tell you what to do.

You do not have to make yourself certain before you come to Him. You can come because you are uncertain. And you can ask, “Jesus, give me wisdom for what is in front of me today.”

Take a Moment With Him

Think about the situation that has been taking up the most space in your mind because you do not know what to do.

Instead of asking God to show you the entire outcome, try asking:

“Lord, what would wisdom look like here?”

Then give yourself a few quiet minutes to sit with that question and the Lord.

1. What are you most afraid will happen if you make the wrong choice?

2. Are you asking God for wisdom, or are you mainly asking Him for certainty?

3. Is fear making the decision feel more urgent or dangerous than it actually is?

4. What information or wisdom do you already have that you may be overlooking?

5. What would it look like to trust God even if you cannot know the outcome yet?

Remember This

Not knowing exactly what to do does not mean God has left you without help. He invites you to ask Him for wisdom.

Write down the situation that requires a decision from you. Then pray one simple prayer over it today:

“God, give me wisdom for the choice I need to make.”
