Wouldn’t it be nice if God occasionally handed us a roadmap?

Not just, “Take the next step.” I mean the whole thing—where we are going, how long it will take, what might go wrong, and perhaps a little note saying, “Don’t worry about Thursday. I’ve already taken care of it.”

I would appreciate that kind of detail. But Joshua didn’t get that either. God gave him an enormous responsibility without explaining every battle, obstacle, or decision ahead. And then God told him something surprising.

“Above all, be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:7, BSB

Reflection

We usually connect courage with doing something frightening. Joshua certainly had plenty of frightening things ahead of him.

But in this verse, God connects courage with obedience.

Joshua needed courage to remain faithful to what God had already taught him.  That makes sense when we remember what Joshua had witnessed. He had seen Israel trust God, but he had also seen what happened when fear, impatience, and circumstances became louder than God's instruction.

Now Joshua would face those same pressures as a leader. There would be moments when another way seemed easier. Faster. Safer. Maybe even more reasonable.

God's instruction was simple:

Do not turn to the right or to the left.

Stay on the path I have given you. Sometimes that is where we need courage too. We may be praying, “God, tell me what happens next,” while God is saying, “Be faithful with what you already know.”

• Forgive.

• Tell the truth.

• Wait instead of forcing something.

• Love the difficult person.

• Keep your word.

• Refuse to let fear make the decision.

None of those choices requires knowing how everything will turn out. They require trusting that God's way is still good when another path looks easier. That is a quieter kind of courage, but it is courage nonetheless.

How Jesus Meets Us

Jesus showed us what this kind of faithfulness looks like.

In Gethsemane, He knew obedience to the Father would cost Him dearly. He did not pretend it was easy. He prayed honestly—and then entrusted Himself to the Father.

Following Jesus does not mean we will always know what comes next. It means we know who we are following.

And He does not ask us to manufacture courage alone. His Spirit helps us remain faithful when fear, impatience, or uncertainty tries to pull us somewhere else.

Take a Moment With Him

Maybe there is something you desperately want God to explain right now.

Instead of asking only:

“God, what is the whole plan?”

ask:

“Lord, is there something You have already shown me that I need courage to obey?”

Sometimes we do not need more information. We need courage to trust what God has already said.

1. Where are you wanting God to explain the outcome before you are willing to obey?

2. Why do you think God connected courage so closely with obedience in Joshua 1:7?

3. Where are you tempted to “turn to the right or to the left” because another choice seems easier?

4. Is there something God has already made clear that you have been hesitant to do?

5. What would faithfulness look like in that situation today?

Remember This

Sometimes courage is trusting God enough to obey before you know how everything will turn out.
