Wisdom from Above
“We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

Biblical Reflection
When we need wisdom, it is easy to think our biggest problem is that we just do not know enough yet.
Maybe if we think about it a little longer, read one more article, ask one more person, or go over all the
possibilities again, something will finally click.
Sometimes that helps. But sometimes the real issue is not that we need more information. We need
help seeing what is already in front of us more clearly.
That is one of the ways the Holy Spirit helps us.
In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul is talking about the difference between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom
that comes from God. He reminds believers that they have received the Spirit who is from God so they
can understand what God has given them.
That means you are not left to sort through life using only your own reasoning.
God has given you His Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Helps Us See More Clearly
The Holy Spirit does not usually hand us a detailed answer to every question we bring to God. More
often, He works in us as we spend time in Scripture and learn to recognize what is true.
He may bring a passage to mind that speaks directly to what you are facing. He may help you notice that
fear is affecting the way you are looking at a situation. He may convict you when you are trying to justify
something you already know does not line up with God’s Word.
There are times when we think we need God to tell us what to do, but what we really need is for Him to
help us see ourselves honestly.
The Holy Spirit can help bring those things into the light.
You may be moving too quickly because you are worried about missing an opportunity. Someone else’s
opinion may be carrying more weight than it should, or you may want one particular outcome so much
that it is becoming harder to look at the situation clearly.
This gentle leading is not meant to shame us, but to help us see more clearly.

Wisdom Is Not Only About Making the Right Choice
We often think of wisdom as something we need when we have a decision to make. But God’s wisdom
goes deeper than choosing between two options.
Wisdom is also about the kind of person we are becoming as we walk with Him.
The Holy Spirit teaches us to recognize what reflects the character of Jesus. Over time, He changes the
way we respond to pressure, disappointment, conflict, uncertainty, and temptation.
That matters because sometimes the question is not simply, “Which choice is right?”
A better question may be, “What would faithfulness to God look like in this situation?”
Sometimes faithfulness looks like slowing down when everyone around us is pushing us to hurry. At
other times, it may mean being honest when avoiding the truth would be easier, or releasing something
we wanted because we begin to see that it is not leading us in a healthy direction with God.
That question can lead us somewhere very different.
This kind of wisdom is not something we learn all at once. It develops as we keep walking with God and
allow His Spirit to shape the way we think.
How Jesus Meets Us
Jesus knew His followers would need help after He returned to the Father.
He told them that the Holy Spirit would teach them and remind them of what He had said.
So when you are trying to understand what to do, you are not trying to solve the situation on your own
while God watches from a distance.
His Spirit is with you.
You can ask Him to help you recognize what is true, show you where your thinking may be off, and bring
God’s Word to mind.
Sometimes the clearest thing God does is not give us a new answer. He helps us understand something
He has already shown us.
Prayer
Think about something you are trying to figure out right now. Instead of beginning with, “God, tell me
what to do,” try praying:
“Holy Spirit, help me see this clearly.”

Then give yourself a little quiet space. You do not have to force an answer or try to make something
happen. Open your Bible. Sit with God for a few minutes. Pay attention to what His Word is showing you
and what may be going on in your own heart.
You may not walk away with every detail settled, but you may begin to see the situation differently.
Reflection Questions
What is influencing the way I am looking at this situation right now?
Is fear, pressure, hurt, or something I strongly want affecting my judgment?
Is there something God has already shown me in Scripture that applies here?
What might the Holy Spirit be helping me notice that I have not paid attention to before?
What would faithfulness to Jesus look like in this situation?
Remember This
You do not have to depend on your own understanding alone. God has given you His Spirit to help you
