You Already Have a Purpose - Step Into What Is Yours to Do

Reflection

Have you ever read about Joshua and thought, Well, at least he knew what his purpose was?

God gave him a very clear assignment. Moses was gone, Joshua would lead Israel forward, and there was no question about what he had been asked to do.

Most of us do not wake up to instructions quite that specific.

Instead, we ask questions like, What am I supposed to be doing with my life? Does God have a purpose for me? Am I missing it?

We may even look at people who lead ministries, churches, businesses, organizations, or movements and assume they have found their purpose while ours is still hiding somewhere.

But Joshua was not trying to discover a private destiny. He was being asked to take his place in something God was already doing.

That gives us a different way to think about our own purpose.

Joshua’s assignment was unique, but his life was part of a much bigger story.

God had called Abraham, formed Israel into a people, delivered them from Egypt, made covenant with them, and promised to bring them into the land. Joshua did not sit down and decide what meaningful thing he could do with his life. God placed a responsibility in front of him within the work He was already doing.

Then God told him to be strong and courageous. Not because Joshua needed to become fearless or because God expected him to create an impressive legacy. Joshua needed courage because obedience would require him to move forward while depending on God.

That helps us when we start asking, What is my purpose?

Jesus has already given His followers a shared purpose.

He told us to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves. He told us to abide in Him. He taught us to love one another, serve, forgive, care for people in need, bear witness to Him, and make disciples.

So we are not starting with a blank page. Our purpose begins with belonging to Jesus and participating in what matters to Him. What may not be clear yet is what that looks like in the ordinary details of today.

How Jesus Meets Us

Jesus does not send us out to manufacture purpose on our own.

He tells us:

“Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.”
John 15:4

That is where this begins. We stay close to Him before we worry about accomplishing something for Him. As we abide in Jesus, we begin to see our plans differently. We become more willing to surrender what we thought the day should look like and ask a much simpler question:

“Lord, what would You like me to do today?”

That question may lead somewhere unexpected. Perhaps someone has been on your mind and you need to call them. Maybe a neighbor could use some help.

You might notice someone who needs encouragement or an opportunity to talk about Jesus may open naturally. It could even be as ordinary as baking cookies, putting Scripture verses with them, and bringing them to someone who could use a reminder that they are cared for.

That may sound small compared with leading Israel across the Jordan. But the size of the assignment is not what gives obedience its value. The question is whether we are willing to follow Jesus into the thing He has placed in front of us.

You Already Know More Than You Think

There will be days when you ask God what He wants you to do and you do not sense anything specific. That does not mean your day has no purpose. Jesus has already told us how His people should live.

There are hungry people who need food and people who need clothing. Someone nearby may be thirsty for physical water, while another person is carrying a deeper thirst and needs to know about the living water Jesus gives.

There are lonely people who need someone to notice them. A discouraged friend may need a phone call. Someone may simply need a person willing to sit beside them and listen.

We do not need a special message from God before we can obey what He has already made clear. Perhaps the better question is not always, “God, what is my great purpose?”

It may be:

“Jesus, how can I love You and love the people You have placed around me today?”

That is purpose too.

Take a Moment With Him

Bring the question you have been carrying to Jesus. Maybe it really is, What am I supposed to do with my life?

You do not have to solve your entire future today.

Spend some time abiding in Him first. Remember what He has already asked of His followers, then offer Him the day that is actually in front of you.

Ask:

“Lord, what would You like me to do for You today?”

Then stay open.

The answer may involve something important that you have been avoiding. It may also be wonderfully ordinary. Either way, you can take the next step knowing the same truth God gave Joshua:

The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Reflection Questions

1. When you think about your purpose, have you been expecting it to look like one major role or assignment?

2. How does it change your perspective to know that Jesus has already given His followers a shared purpose?

3. Is there someone already in your life who could use encouragement, practical help, prayer, or the hope of Christ today?

4. What makes it difficult for you to ask God, “What would You like me to do today?” and genuinely leave the answer open?

5. Is there a small act of obedience you have been overlooking because it did not seem important enough to count?

A Prayer for Today

Jesus, I sometimes make purpose more complicated than it needs to be. I look for something big enough to prove that my life matters, and I can miss the people and opportunities already in front of me.

Teach me to abide in You. Help me surrender my plans instead of simply asking You to bless what I have already decided to do.

Open my eyes to the people around me. Show me where I can love, serve, encourage, give, listen, or speak about You today.

Give me the strength and courage to follow when You lead, even when what You ask seems small or different from what I expected. I give You this day. What would You like me to do with it?

Remember This

You do not need Joshua’s assignment to have a purpose.

Jesus has already called you to love God, abide in Him, love others, serve, bear witness to Him, and participate in making disciples.

How that looks in your life may change from one season to another. Some days the assignment may feel important. Other days it may look so ordinary that no one else notices. Your purpose is not measured by how impressive your assignment appears.

Stay close to Jesus, offer Him the day you have been given, and trust Him enough to follow where He leads.
