PRAYERS FOR WHEN YOU'RE DISCOURAGED
When I Need Hope
to Keep Going
Bring your discouragement, weariness,
and unanswered questions to God,
and let His truth renew your hope.

SCRIPTURE
“Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you;
He will never let the righteous be shaken.”
—Psalm 55:22
PRAYER
There are days when discouragement feels louder than everything else. Louder than what you know is true or the Scriptures you have read. Louder than the prayers you have prayed. Louder than the hope you are trying to hold onto.
You may still believe God is good and feel tired at the same time. You may trust that He is near and still wonder why the situation has not changed. You may want to keep praying, but feel unsure of what to say anymore.
This prayer is a place to bring your discouragement honestly to Jesus. You do not have to hide the fear underneath it. You do not have to pretend your heart is stronger than it feels.
You can come close to Him right here.
Scripture Foundation
“Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you;
He will never let the righteous be shaken.”
—Psalm 55:22
Psalm 55 does not ask us to deny the weight of what we are carrying. It invites us to bring our cares to the Lord and trust Him to sustain us. To be sustained by God does not always mean the situation changes immediately. Or it could mean He holds us steady when our emotions feel unsteady. Perhaps it means He gives enough grace for the next step and He reminds us that we are not carrying the burden alone.
As you pray, you will also be guided by these truths:
God is close to the brokenhearted. —Psalm 34:18
The Lord hears when His people cry to Him. —Psalm 34:17
Jesus invites the weary to come to Him. —Matthew 11:28
God gives strength to the weary. —Isaiah 40:29
Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. —Romans 8:38–39
Preparing to Pray
Take a quiet moment before you begin.
You do not need to organize all your thoughts first. You do not need to know exactly what is underneath your discouragement before you come to Jesus.
Slow down and name the thing that feels heaviest today.
You may want to sit with your hands open as a simple reminder that you are bringing what you cannot carry into the care of God.
When you are ready, pray slowly through the words below. Pause whenever a sentence feels personal. Add your own words where you need to. Sit quietly when words do not come.
A Prayer for When Discouragement Feels Louder Than Hope
Jesus,
I come to You honestly today. I’m discouraged, and I don’t want to pretend I’m not.
There are places in my heart that feel tired from waiting, hoping, praying, and not seeing things change the way I thought they would. I’ve tried to keep going, but some days the weight feels heavier than my hope.
Your Word says to cast my cares on You because You will sustain me. So I’m bringing You what I cannot carry well on my own.
Please help me see what is underneath this discouragement. If fear has been shaping my thoughts, show me gently. If I have started believing You are far away, remind me that You are near. If I have become afraid to hope again, help me trust Your heart one small step at a time.
Lord, I need Your truth to be louder than the thoughts that pull me away from You.
Remind me that You are close to the brokenhearted. Remind me that You do not turn away from tired prayers. Remind me that I am not forgotten, even when I do not understand Your timing.
I surrender the things I cannot control: the outcome, the timing, the answers I wish I had, and the pressure to be stronger than I am.
Give me grace for today. Give me courage for the next faithful step. Help me stay close to You instead of withdrawing into fear.
Thank You for meeting me here, not after I have figured everything out, but right in the middle of my discouragement.
Let hope rise again—not because everything is easy, but because You are with me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Pause and Reflect
Remain quiet for a moment before moving on.
You might pray one of these simple sentences again:
Jesus, the discouragement I am bringing to You is __________.
Jesus, the fear underneath it may be __________.
Jesus, help me remember that You are __________.
Do not rush this moment. Let it become an honest conversation between you and God.
Your Personal Response
Choose one Scripture from this prayer that speaks most clearly to what you are carrying:
Psalm 55:22
Psalm 34:18
Psalm 34:17
Matthew 11:28
Isaiah 40:29
Romans 8:38–39
Write the verse in a journal, save it on your phone, or place it somewhere you will see it this week.
Each time discouragement rises, pray:
“Lord, help me cast this care on You. Sustain me today.”
You are not using the verse as a formula to make hard feelings disappear. You are allowing God’s Word to help you remember what remains true when discouragement feels loud.

REFLECTION
What fear has been hiding beneath my discouragement,
and how is Jesus inviting me to bring it to Him today?
