Nahum

Nahum takes its name from the prophet Nachum (נַחוּם), whose name is related to “comfort” or “consolation.” Nahum announces the coming fall of Nineveh, the powerful Assyrian capital that had brought violence and oppression to many nations. The book is a message of judgment against cruelty and arrogance, but also of comfort for those who had suffered under Assyria’s power. Nahum reveals the Lord as just and sovereign—the God who is patient, but who will not ignore evil forever, and who remains a refuge for those who trust in Him.
