SCRIPTURE

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you;
I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

—Joshua 1:5

PRAYER

Scripture

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you;
I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

—Joshua 1:5

Prayer

Sometimes the hardest part of taking the next step is not knowing what will happen after you take it.

You may have a decision in front of you, a conversation you know you need to have, or a responsibility you cannot keep avoiding. Perhaps you have prayed for direction and still wish God would show you a little more of the road before asking you to move.

Uncertainty can make even a small step feel much larger than it is.

This prayer is a place to bring that uncertainty honestly to God. You do not have to convince yourself that you feel brave. You do not need to pretend you know how everything will turn out.

You can come to Him with the questions you still have and ask Him for wisdom, courage, and a deeper trust in His presence.

Scripture Foundation

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you;
I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

—Joshua 1:5

Joshua stood at the beginning of a responsibility he had never carried before. Moses was gone, Israel still had to enter the land, and Joshua could not know every challenge that waited ahead.

God did not begin by giving Joshua every detail of the journey. He reminded Joshua that the God who had been faithful before would remain with him now.

That promise was spoken specifically to Joshua in the responsibility God had given him, so we should not treat it as a guarantee that every decision we make will succeed. But it reveals something that remains true throughout Scripture: God is faithful, and His people are called to depend on Him rather than on their ability to control the future.

As you pray, you will also be guided by these truths:

  • God gives wisdom to those who ask Him. —James 1:5

  • God’s Word gives light for the path in front of us. —Psalm 119:105

  • We are called to trust God rather than depend entirely on our own understanding. —Proverbs 3:5–6

  • God told Joshua that His presence was the reason he could move forward courageously. —Joshua 1:9

  • Jesus promises to remain with His followers. —Matthew 28:20

Preparing to Pray

Take a quiet moment before you begin.

Think about the situation that feels uncertain right now. Instead of trying to solve the entire future, name what is actually in front of you today.

You might ask:

What am I afraid could happen if I take this step?

Then bring that fear to God without trying to make it sound more spiritual than it feels.

When you are ready, pray slowly through the words below. Pause when something connects with what you are facing. Add your own words. If you do not know what to say, simply remain with God for a moment and remember that He already knows what you are carrying.

A Prayer for Courage When I Cannot See What Comes Next

Father,

You know the situation in front of me and all the questions I have about what comes next.

Part of me wants to see the whole road before I move. I want reassurance that I am making the right choice, that I will be able to handle whatever happens, and that things will work out the way I hope.

But I cannot see that far ahead. Your Word tells me how You spoke to Joshua when he stood at the beginning of something much bigger than himself. You reminded him, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Help me remember what those words reveal about You. You are faithful. You do not change when my circumstances become uncertain. You are not confused by what I cannot understand, and You are not limited by what I cannot see.

Lord, give me wisdom for the decision in front of me. Show me where Your Word has already given clear direction. Help me listen to wise counsel and recognize when I need more information before I act.

If I am rushing because I am uncomfortable with waiting, slow me down. If fear is keeping me from doing something You have already made clear, give me courage to move.

Teach me the difference.

Your Word says that it is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Help me receive the light You give for today instead of demanding answers about every part of tomorrow.

Jesus, keep me close to You while I walk through what I cannot predict. When my thoughts begin running ahead into everything that could go wrong, bring me back to what is true about You.

I surrender the outcome I cannot control, the questions I cannot answer yet, and the future I cannot see. Give me courage for the next faithful step and enough trust to leave the rest of the road in Your hands.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Pause and Reflect

Remain quiet for a moment before moving on.

You might finish one of these sentences in your own words:

God, the part of the road I wish I could see is __________.

The outcome I am most afraid of is __________.

God, what I know to be true about You is __________.

Do not rush to produce an answer. Let this be a conversation with God rather than another problem you have to solve.

Your Personal Response

Choose one Scripture from this prayer that speaks most clearly to what you are facing:

  • Joshua 1:5

  • Joshua 1:9

  • Psalm 119:105

  • Proverbs 3:5–6

  • James 1:5

  • Matthew 28:20

Write the verse in your journal, save it on your phone, or place it somewhere you will see it this week.

When uncertainty begins pulling your thoughts too far into the future, pray:

“Lord, give me wisdom for what belongs to today and courage to trust You with what I cannot see.”

You are not using Scripture to convince yourself that everything will happen the way you want. You are allowing God’s Word to remind you where your confidence belongs when the future is uncertain.

REFLECTION

What am I trying to know about the future before I am willing to trust God with the next step?
