SCRIPTURE

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.”

—James 1:5

PRAYER

Scripture

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.”

—James 1:5

Sometimes the difficult part of making a decision is not a lack of options. It is not knowing which option is wisest.

You may have a situation in front of you that requires a decision. You have thought about it, prayed about it, and perhaps talked with someone you trust. Yet you still wish God would make the answer unmistakably clear.

That uncertainty can leave you wondering whether you are missing His direction.

James gives us a different place to begin. When we lack wisdom, we can ask God for it.

This prayer is an invitation to bring the situation honestly to Him—not so you can force certainty, but so His Word can shape the way you think, listen, and choose.

Scripture Foundation

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.”

—James 1:5

James assumes there will be times when we do not know what to do. His response is simple: ask God for wisdom.

Wisdom is not the same as knowing exactly what will happen after we make a choice. Biblical wisdom helps us see more clearly, recognize what is shaping us, and respond faithfully with what we know.

This week, we are praying with these truths:

  • God gives wisdom generously when we ask. —James 1:5

  • We can trust God when our own understanding is limited. —Proverbs 3:5–6

  • Godly wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, merciful, fruitful, impartial, and sincere. —James 3:17

  • Wise counsel can help us see what we may be missing. —Proverbs 15:22

  • God’s Word gives light for the path in front of us. —Psalm 119:105

We may not receive a complete picture of the future, but God has not left us without help.

Preparing to Pray

Think about the situation that requires a decision from you right now.

Instead of trying to solve it for the next few minutes, ask yourself:

What am I most afraid will happen if I choose wrong?

Bring that fear to God.

Then ask:

Am I asking God for wisdom—or am I asking Him to remove every uncertainty before I choose?

You do not need to make yourself feel confident before you pray. Come as you are and let God meet you there.

A Prayer for Wisdom When I Don’t Know What to Choose

Father,

You know the situation in front of me. You know what I understand, what I do not know, and what I am afraid could happen if I choose wrong.

Your Word tells me that when I lack wisdom, I can ask You. So I am asking.

Give me wisdom.

Lord,

Help me trust You instead of depending only on what makes sense to me. If fear, pressure, pride, or the need to please someone is influencing my thinking, help me recognize it.

Shape my choices with the wisdom You describe in James—wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruit.

Give me humility to listen to wise counsel. Help me hear what I need to hear, even when it is not what I expected or wanted.

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I would like enough light to see everything ahead, but sometimes You give me enough light for what is in front of me today.

Help me receive that.

Show me what You have already made clear through Your Word. Give me patience where I need to wait, courage where I need to act, and wisdom to know the difference. I surrender the outcome I cannot control.

Help me make the wisest, most faithful choice I can with what I know today, and then trust You with what comes next.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Pause and Reflect

Stay quiet with God for a moment.

You might finish one or two of these sentences:

God, what I am most afraid of getting wrong is ____________.

The outcome I keep trying to control is ____________.

One truth from Your Word I need to remember is ____________.

The part of this situation I need Your wisdom for most is ____________.

You do not need to manufacture an answer. Simply notice what comes to the surface as you sit with God.

Your Personal Response

Choose one of this week’s Scriptures:

  • James 1:5

  • Proverbs 3:5–6

  • James 3:17

  • Proverbs 15:22

  • Psalm 119:105

Write it somewhere you will see it this week.

When you catch yourself running through every possible outcome again, turn your attention back to God and pray:

“Lord, give me wisdom for the choice I need to make and help me trust You with what I cannot know.”

You are not using Scripture to guarantee that everything will turn out the way you hope.

You are allowing God’s Word to shape how you walk through the uncertainty with Him.

Continue the Reflection

If you would like to spend more time with this, use this week’s Reflection & Journaling pages to explore the fear underneath the decision and what it may be revealing.

Then use The Wisdom Check when you are ready to look more practically at the situation, what may be influencing you, and what a faithful choice could look like.

REFLECTION

What would it look like to trust God with the outcome while I seek wisdom for the choice in front of me?

"Be still and know I am God"
