No Fear of Drought

Reflections
As we continue Jeremiah’s picture of the well-watered tree, we encounter another remarkable promise. Not only do its leaves remain green when heat comes, but it also has no worries in a year of drought.
At first glance, this may seem impossible. How can a tree not worry during a drought? After all, drought means there is little rain. The ground becomes dry. Rivers shrink. Plants wither. The landscape begins to reflect the lack of water. Yet Jeremiah tells us that this particular tree remains unconcerned. Why?
Because its confidence is not in the weather. Its confidence is in the source. This is a lesson we often struggle to learn. Many of us naturally evaluate our circumstances before we evaluate God’s faithfulness. When everything is going well, we feel secure. When resources seem plentiful, we feel confident. When prayers are answered quickly, our faith feels strong.
But what happens when the landscape changes? What happens when the finances become uncertain? What happens when the diagnosis arrives? What happens when the relationship struggles? What happens when the future seems unclear? Fear often begins when we start measuring God’s faithfulness by our circumstances.
Yet the well-watered tree teaches us a different way to live. Its confidence is not based upon what it sees above the ground. Its confidence is based upon what it is connected to beneath the surface. While others see drought, the roots are still finding water. While others see scarcity, the roots are still connected to the stream. While others see uncertainty, the roots remain anchored in a dependable source.
The same is true in our spiritual lives. The world around us may change. Economies rise and fall. People come and go. Health can change. Circumstances can shift overnight. But God remains the same. His love has not changed. His character has not changed. His promises have not changed. His faithfulness has not changed. The Source continues flowing even when the landscape appears dry.
This does not mean we never experience concern or difficulty. It does not mean we ignore real challenges. Rather, it means that our ultimate confidence rests in something greater than what we can see. The well-watered tree understands that drought only affects the surface. The stream beneath continues flowing.
Likewise, when our roots are deeply connected to God, we begin to discover a peace that circumstances cannot fully explain. Fear loses some of its grip because we know the One who holds tomorrow. Trust grows every time we remember who God is; He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is the one who answers our prayers. He is our provision and He is our rescuer. He has carried us through every season.
Each season becomes a reminder that the God who was faithful then will be faithful now. The drought may be real. But so is the Source. And the God as our Source has never run dry.

What circumstances am I currently allowing to influence my peace?
Where am I tempted to measure God’s faithfulness by what I can see?
How has God provided for me during previous seasons of drought?
What fears become smaller when I focus on God’s faithfulness rather than my circumstances?
Prayer
Father,
Thank You that You are my Source in every season. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my circumstances to become greater in my mind than Your faithfulness.
Help me to trust You even when I cannot see what lies ahead. Remind me that Your love, Your promises, and Your provision never change.
When fear begins to rise, draw my attention back to You. Strengthen my roots so that they remain firmly connected to Your Living Water. Teach me to rest in Your faithfulness rather than in favorable circumstances.
Thank You that even when the landscape appears dry, Your grace continues to flow.
