Called to Be His Disciple

Matthew 4:19
“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Reflection

In the first century, becoming a disciple was not something a person decided for themselves. Students could ask to study under a rabbi, but ultimately the rabbi chose which students he would accept. Only the most promising students were invited to leave everything behind and follow him. Being chosen meant the rabbi believed the student could one day become like him.

This makes the moment Jesus called His disciples even more remarkable.

When Jesus walked along the Sea of Galilee, He did not go to the religious schools to find the best students. Instead, He called ordinary people who were working their everyday jobs. Fishermen were mending their nets. A tax collector was sitting at his booth. Others were simply living their lives.

And Jesus spoke two simple words:

“Follow Me.”

With that invitation, everything changed.

The call of Jesus was not merely an invitation to learn new ideas. It was a call into a new life. Those He called left their nets, their tables, and their familiar routines. They began walking with Him, learning His ways and watching His life unfold day by day.

The same call continues today. Jesus still invites people into discipleship. Not because we are the most qualified, the most disciplined, or the most spiritually mature. He calls us because He desires relationship with us and because He knows what we can become as we walk with Him.

Notice the promise Jesus gave:

“Follow Me, and I will make you…”

Discipleship is not something we accomplish by our own effort. Jesus Himself is the one who shapes us. As we follow Him, listen to Him, and walk with Him through the ordinary moments of life, He slowly forms His character within us.

The call to discipleship begins with a simple response:

“Yes, Lord.”

We do not need to have everything figured out. We simply begin the journey by following the One who called us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You. I know that I am not perfect, but You have invited me into a life with You. Help me respond to Your call with trust and obedience. Teach me to walk in Your ways and shape my life as I follow You day by day. Amen.

Reflection Questions

  1. When did you first sense Jesus inviting you to follow Him?

  2. What might Jesus be asking you to trust Him with today?

  3. How does it change your perspective to realize that Jesus Himself will shape you as you follow Him?

Today’s Thought

Jesus does not call the most qualified people to follow Him. He calls ordinary people and then walks with them as He transforms their lives.
