The Mirror of the Law

Romans 3:20
Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.

Reflection

Most people believe they are basically a good person.

If you asked someone on the street, “Do you think you’re a good person?” most would probably answer yes. We compare ourselves to others and feel that, overall, we are doing fairly well.

But the Bible invites us to look at goodness in a different way.

God gave the Ten Commandments not simply as rules for living but as something like a mirror. A mirror does not clean your face—it simply shows you what is there. If you look into a mirror and see dirt on your face, the mirror has done its job by revealing the truth.

The law of God works the same way.

The commandments reveal what God’s perfect goodness looks like. They show us the holiness of God and the standard of love that reflects His character. When we look into that mirror honestly, we begin to see that our lives do not always reflect that perfect goodness.

This is not meant to discourage us. It is meant to help us see something important.

The law was never given as a ladder for people to climb their way to heaven. Instead, it shows us something we might not realize on our own—that we cannot make ourselves perfectly righteous before God.

And that realization opens the door to grace. When we understand that we cannot save ourselves, we become ready to receive the gift God has provided through Jesus. The mirror of the law reveals our need, and the love of Christ provides the answer.

Over the next few days, we will gently look at some of the commandments together, not to condemn ourselves, but to understand why we all need the mercy and forgiveness that God offers.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your Word that shows us truth. Help me look honestly at my heart without fear, knowing that Your love is greater than my failures. Open my eyes to understand why I need Your grace and lead me closer to Jesus, who has made a way for me to be forgiven and restored. Amen.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you think about being a “good person,” what standard do you usually use?

  2. How does the idea of God’s law being a mirror change the way you view the commandments?

  3. Why might recognizing our need for grace be an important step in our relationship with God?

Today’s Thought

The law shows us the truth about ourselves
but it also prepares our hearts to receive the grace of Jesus.
