When Knowing God Becomes Loving God

Have you ever asked yourself, “Do I really love God?” I have. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I truly loved Him at all. Deep down, I wanted to—but my heart was clouded by doubts and false beliefs. These kept me from living in the truth.
Job knew what that felt like. For years, he had heard about God, but it wasn’t until his suffering and honest conversations with the Lord that he truly knew Him. When God revealed the depth of His power, wisdom, and creation, Job could only respond in awe:
“My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You.” (Job 42:5)
That moment changed everything. Job’s faith deepened, his understanding grew, and his love for God became personal. Because when we truly know God—His heart, His faithfulness, His mercy—we can’t help but love Him.
“Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek You.” (Psalm 9:10)
Love Grows from Relationship, Not Religion
You can’t genuinely love someone you don’t know. Love for God doesn’t come from rules or routines; it comes from relationship. It’s born out of knowing His character, His goodness, and His faithfulness.
Just like a tree can’t bear fruit without roots, we can’t truly love God without first being rooted in knowing Him. The more we understand who He is, the more we fall in love with Him.
When we’ve seen His faithfulness, we learn to trust Him. And when trust grows, fear fades.
“When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3)
“Perfect love drives out fear.” (1 John 4:18)
Love isn’t something we force; it flows naturally from a heart that’s been loved first.
“We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
Just as branches don’t struggle to produce grapes, love for God flows naturally when we abide in Him. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” Obedience isn’t about obligation; it’s about love in action. When we obey from the heart, it’s not burdensome; it’s beautiful.
So lately, I’ve been asking myself: Where is God calling me to obey as an expression of my love for Him?
Examples of Deep Love
Think about the people in Scripture who knew God:
Moses spoke with Him face-to-face and interceded for Israel because of his love.
David poured out songs of praise because he had experienced God’s mercy and deliverance.
Paul counted everything as loss compared to knowing Christ, and his life became a living offering of love and service.
Their love didn’t appear overnight; it grew from knowing Him deeply.
How to Grow in Knowing (and Loving) God
Study His Word — Learn His names, His promises, and His attributes. Let Scripture reveal who He is.
Spend Time with Him — In prayer, silence, and journaling. Relationship grows with time and attention.
Notice His Works — Slow down enough to see His hand in your day-to-day life. Stay connected; don’t rush in and out of His presence.
Respond in Obedience — Love grows when we act on it. Faith without action fades, but love expressed through obedience deepens our relationship with Him.
Reflecting on Our Journey
Today, take a few moments to meditate on this:
How has your love for God grown as you’ve come to know Him more deeply?
What fears or barriers still keep you from fully trusting Him?
In what area of your life might God be inviting you to show love through obedience right now?
The more we know Him, the more we love Him, and the more His love transforms every part of who we are.
