A white Bible and teal notebook on a light wood surface. Text reads "Praying God's Word." Calm, reflective mood.
When I don’t have the words, the Psalms give voice to my soul. Praying them draws me closer to God’s heart.

I’ll never forget a season that marked the true beginning of my journey in praying Scripture. I was facing a situation that felt utterly out of my control—one of those times when life’s problems seem bigger than you and your prayers feel like they’re just bouncing off the ceiling. I didn’t know what else to do, but I knew I needed God. That’s when the Lord led me to the Psalms, and what I found there changed everything.

As I began reading, it felt like the words were reaching right into my heart. The Psalms were filled with raw honesty: joy and sorrow, confidence and fear, praise and complaints, sometimes all in the same breath! I was stunned to find that the emotions I’d been carrying around so quietly had already been written down—held up to God by people who understood my pain. These words echoed my own struggles, showing me that I wasn’t alone in my fears, anxieties, and doubts. It felt like someone had handed me the perfect prayer language to express all I was feeling but couldn’t quite put in words.

But those verses were more than just a mirror of my pain. In the Psalms, I found something even more precious: reminders of God’s strength, His love, and His unchanging nature. When my heart felt like giving up, these words lifted my gaze back to Him, grounding me in His faithfulness. Somehow, these prayers pulled me out of the endless spiral of worry, leading me into His comfort and peace. They became daily conversations between me and God, teaching me how to praise and worship Him as I sought comfort in His presence.

As I continued praying through the Psalms, they began to do something even deeper within me. These prayers started revealing parts of my heart that needed healing. Verses about trust and courage pierced right through my worry, while passages about hope and restoration spoke to the broken and exhausted parts of me. Each Psalm became like the Lord speaking to my heart, reaching into those hard-to-access places, filling them with His love and grace. When I prayed His Word, I was inviting God into every messy, painful part of my struggles. And He met me there, bringing comfort, strength, and healing in ways I hadn’t expected.

One of the most beautiful things about praying Scripture is that it opens the door for the Holy Spirit to work in ways we may not even fully understand. As I prayed through the Psalms, the Spirit gently molded me, nudging me to confront things I might have ignored—like my pride, impatience, or lack of trust. Sometimes the lessons were tough; other times, I felt an invitation to simply rest in God’s goodness. The Psalms brought a transformation in me, not because of my own strength but because God’s Word is alive and powerful.

In that season, the Psalms became so much more than words on a page; they became personal prayers that brought me close to the heart of God. I learned that when I prayed His words, I wasn’t just speaking to Him—I was being shaped by Him. As I leaned into these prayers, I learned to trust more, to hold onto His promises, and to rest in His love.

If you’re facing struggles that feel too big to carry on your own, or if you’re at a loss for words in prayer, try turning to the Psalms. Let their words become your words, and let God meet you wherever you are. I can promise you that He’ll bring comfort, healing, and peace in a way that only He can.

I’m also excited to share that there’s now a new section on my website under Resources called Praying God’s Word. There, I’ll be posting some of the prayers that sustained me during my journey—prayers that I hope will bring you peace, encouragement, and a deeper connection to God’s heart. So, grab a cup of tea, get cozy, and let’s journey through His Word together.

In faith and friendship,

Maria
