Discovering the Depths of Knowing God

If I’m honest, I’ve realized that for all I know about Jesus, I barely know Him at all. Over the years, the Lord has gently shown me that there’s a difference between knowing facts about Him and truly experiencing Him in relationship.

He’s used many surprising techniques to help me grow in this area. Something as simple as cookie tags — yes, cookie tags! — became a way for Him to remind me of His goodness, faithfulness, and love. Each little verse written down was more than just words on a card; it was an invitation to know His heart. He has also called me to know His Name — not just in passing, but to really understand the depth of what it means when He reveals Himself as Shepherd, Redeemer, Healer, or Father. Each name has become a doorway into His character.

And yet, even with all of this, I know I’m only scratching the surface. There is always more of Him to discover.

Why Knowing God Matters

Over the next seven weeks, we’ll be exploring six ways to draw closer to God: Knowing Him, Loving Him, Trusting Him, Obeying Him, Abiding in Him, and Glorifying Him with our lives. Each step builds on the one before it, but it all begins here — with knowing God.

Knowing God is more than memorizing Bible verses or having the right answers. It’s about relationship. It’s about encountering Him personally, experiencing His presence, and letting go of the false beliefs we’ve picked up along the way — lies that whisper He’s distant, angry, or too busy for us. When we dig deeper into His Word and spend time in His presence, those false images begin to fall away, and we discover a God who is near, loving, and faithful.

An Invitation to Go Deeper

This week, I want to invite you to press in and make space to know Him better. Ask questions. Be honest about your doubts. Spend time in His Word, not just to study but to listen for His heartbeat. Knowing God means shifting from information to intimacy — from head knowledge to heart connection.

You may find, like me, that the more you know of Him, the more you realize how much you have yet to discover. And that’s the beauty of it. Our God is infinite, and the journey of knowing Him never ends.

The Journey of Spiritual Growth

As we embark on this journey together, let’s remember that spiritual growth is not a race. It’s a beautiful process. Each step we take brings us closer to understanding His love and grace. We can embrace the moments of doubt and confusion, knowing they are part of our growth.

Let’s create a space in our hearts for His presence. In the quiet moments, we can hear Him whispering truths about who He is. We can reflect on His goodness and mercy. This is where transformation happens.

Embracing His Names

Each name of God carries profound meaning. When we call Him Shepherd, we acknowledge His guidance. When we refer to Him as Redeemer, we celebrate His saving grace. Healer reminds us of His power to mend our brokenness. Father signifies a relationship built on love and trust.

Take a moment to reflect on which name resonates with you the most. How does it shape your understanding of God? Embracing these names can deepen our relationship with Him.

Reflection Questions for the Week

  1. When you think about God, what comes to mind first? Do those thoughts line up with His true character as revealed in Scripture?

  2. What false beliefs about God do you need to let go of in order to know Him more personally?

  3. Which of God’s names (Shepherd, Healer, Provider, Father, etc.) has been most meaningful to you recently?

Closing Thought

Knowing God isn’t about having it all figured out — it’s about walking daily with the One who already knows us fully. As we begin this seven-week journey, let’s start here: by asking the Lord to reveal more of Himself, so that we might know Him not just with our minds, but with our hearts and lives.

Let’s embrace this adventure together, allowing His love to transform us. We are not alone in this journey. We have each other and, most importantly, we have Him.
